Down 12-0 at the half, the Notre Dame Jugglers responded with 3 second half touchdowns to defeat rival STMC Knights 21-12.
STM had gone ahead 6-0 at the end of the first quarter and added another touchdown in the second quarter to establish the half time lead.
In the third quarter, Notre Dame drove the ball down the field and cashed in on a 10-yard touchdown pass from QB Max Brougham to tight end Isaiah Picariello. Vito DeCotiis added the extra point to narrow the STM lead to 12-7.
In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame again drove the ball down the field and scored a major on a 2-yard run by DeCotiis. A two-point conversion pass from Brougham to split end Sal Renzullo gave the Jugglers a 15-12 lead.
On the ensuing kick-off, a fumble by STM and a Notre Dame recovery led to another ND score, this time by running back Zack White on a 2-yard run. That made the score 21-12, and the game ended that way.
Defensive standouts for Notre Dame were linebackers Shaan Sandhu and Picariello, safeties Strachan Liberman and Eathen Knutson, and defensive lineman Josh Burchak.
Brougham was a leader on offense, picking up several key first-downs. DeCotiis and White ran the ball very well in the second half.
Coach Kelly on Saturday's game:
"We started the game poorly, unable to move the ball, but made a great second half comeback. We have a ton of errors to clean up but that is what non-conference games are for. Full credit to STM for their outstanding play especially in the first half."
The Varsity team now play W.J. Mouat, where Kelly coached for many years. "Should be a good test next Friday (Sep 16) at 3:15 pm on Juggler Field."
