The Notre Dame Varsity football team bounced back from a disappointing loss to Carson Graham last week with a solid performance against Mt. Douglas in Victoria Friday night, coming away with a hard-fought 29-26 victory.
The first quarter saw the Jugglers start quickly, scoring on their first two possessions. Wide receiver Sal Renzullo hauled in a Max Brougham pass and took it 70 yards for a touchdown. Running back Eathen Knutson broke off the right side of the line and scampered 75 yards for another major. Two Vito DeCotiis extra points made it 14-0 Notre Dame. The Ram responded with a touchdown drive of their own to close out the first quarter at 14-7.
In the second quarter, QB Brougham led the Jugglers on two more touchdown drives and took the ball into the end zone himself both times. His scoring plays were from 1 yard and 4 yards out. DeCotiis converted one touchdown with a kick and one for two points on a pass to Andrea Ferronato.
Mt. Douglas also had a strong second quarter scoring two touchdowns of their own. The halftime score read Notre Dame 29, Mt. Douglas 20.
The second half saw both teams hurt by penalties, turnovers and missed field goals. The only scoring came on a short Mt. Doug run with less than a minute to go in the game. Notre Dame successfully recovered the onside kick and sealed their second league victory of the season.
Outstanding performances on defense were turned in by corner Kyle Torresan with two interceptions and defensive end Shaan Sandhu.
Offensively, the stars were Brougham, Renzullo, Knutson, Zack White and tackle Josh Burchak.
Coach Kelly:
This game was a real character test for our team, and we responded admirably, despite a lot of adversity. Next week, we take on a tough Belmont team at 2pm Friday, October 21st on Juggler Field.
